Overview of Us
About Sheyenne GRIT
Sheyenne is a farming and ranching community set along the Sheyenne River in eastern North Dakota. With around 185 residents, it is a place where neighbors look out for one another, and volunteers keep traditions alive. The town sits within the hills of the Sheyenne River Valley and the Continental Divide, surrounded by rich farmland, cattle pastures, and abundant wildlife. Founded in 1883 when the railroad came through, Sheyenne has always been shaped by people who work hard and care deeply about their home.
Even without a school since 2006 or a grocery store for more than 20 years, the town has kept its community spirit through annual events like the Fourth of July stone pit BBQ, the Sheyenne Stampede, and the Christmas Day Dinner. Visitors are welcomed by frontier-style storefronts, local hospitality, and a strong sense of place.
A Rural Renaissance
In recent years, Sheyenne has experienced a wave of progress. Volunteers and community leaders have worked together to clear four dilapidated lots, renovate two homes, and refresh Main Street through a federal reconstruction project that added new curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains, and lighting. A western facade apartment received new siding, windows, and doors in 2025, and newly planted trees now line Main Street, parks, and boulevards.
One of the most meaningful transformations is the historic Sinclair Station. After sitting empty for decades, it was carefully restored by a local carpenter and will soon become Sheyenne’s first grocery store in more than two decades.
A Community Powered by Volunteers
Sheyenne is supported by a strong network of local organizations that give their time, skills, and heart to the community. Alongside Sheyenne GRIT, these active volunteer groups help preserve local history, support families and seniors, host events, maintain shared spaces, and keep traditions alive. Together, they reflect the deep culture of service and teamwork that makes Sheyenne a place people continue to show up for.
