A Model Other Rural Towns Can Follow
Our Vision
Sheyenne’s story shows what is possible when a community builds the right foundation. Many rural towns face similar struggles. They have dedicated volunteers, highway access, businesses that want to grow, and job openings in every industry. What they lack is enough people and enough starting capital to take on large projects.
Housing availability is the most important factor. Without homes, new families cannot move in. Once housing is addressed, childcare and healthy food options become essential to help residents stay and build their lives locally.
The biggest barrier for most rural towns is the lack of early funding. Grants often require matching dollars or reimbursement for expenses long after the work is complete. This creates delays and limits what communities can accomplish.
Breaking Down Barriers
To support small towns more effectively, rural development models should include:
· Grants that do not require matching funds
· In-kind volunteer work as an indicator of commitment and success
· Flexible guidelines that let communities choose the projects that matter most
· A state endowment fund that reaches towns with very small populations
Sheyenne’s community-owned finance tool demonstrates how these ideas can empower a town to solve its housing shortage and build long-term wealth.
